Bringezu has authored more than 280 scientific publications. Bringezu earned a degree in biology and PhD in ecosystems analysis from the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and a post-doctoral degree at Germany's Technical University of Berlin. Bringezu has initiated several scientific networks, such as ConAccount, on material flows analysis for sustainability, and is founding member of the International Society for Industrial Ecology. He has pioneered methods such as material flows analysis, which is rapidly becoming a widely accepted practice. Bringezu's fields of study encompass the analysis of the socio-industrial metabolism and related land use and the instruments to sustain resource supply, use and waste management. Bringezu is member of the International Resource Panel, had advised the former EU´s Environment Commissioner Janis Potocznik, as well as other committees and has served as referee for the evaluation of research for national and international organizations. Stefan Bringezu is Professor for Sustainable Resource Management and Director at the Centre of Environmental Systems Research (CESR) of the University of Kassel where he chairs the research group on Sustainable Resource Futures.
